Rex Matthews to serve an­other term

Rex Matthews has been re­turned by ac­cla­ma­tion as Mayor of the Town of Grand Bank.

He was the only can­di­date to file nom­i­na­tion pa­pers for the po­si­tion of Mayor on Tues­day (Sept. 5), nom­i­na­tion day.

This will be Matthews’ sec­ond con­sec­u­tive term as Mayor. He was elected in 2013 beat­ing out Dar­rell Lafosse.

In his 25 years serv­ing in mu­nic­i­pal pol­i­tics, Matthews has held the Mayor chair in pre­vi­ous years.

He first took the chair in Novem­ber 1985, he con­tin­ued on as Mayor un­til Oc­to­ber 1997, when Clay­ton Welsh be­came mayor.

Matthews re­turned as Mayor in Septem­ber 2001 serv­ing two con­sec­u­tive terms, be­fore los­ing the elec­tion to Lafosse in 2009.

Coun­cil seats

Five cur­rent coun­cil mem­bers have sub­mit­ted their names for re-elec­tion, as well as four new­com­ers to the bal­lot.

An ad­vance poll will take place on Sept. 19 at the Grand Bank Mu­nic­i­pal Cen­tre. Polling booths on elec­tion day (Sept. 26) will be lo­cated at the Par­tanna Au­di­to­rium.
