Rachel Cousins nominated for Rising Star award
POINT MAY, NL – Rachel Cousins, a singer/ songwriter with ties to the Burin Peninsula, has been nominated for a pair of awards by MusicNL.
Cousins, who makes her home in St. John’s with her parents, said she was with her mom, aunt, and her best friend when she learned of the nomination.
“We were sitting at the press conference and then my name came up on the nominations,” she said. “Everyone was quite shocked. I could have jumped out of my seat. I was every excited.”
Cousins, who recently released her first album, “This Fire,” has been nominated for Female Artist of the Year as well as Rising Star of the Year.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Cousins, who said she didn’t expect to be nominated for an award because her EP went under the time criteria.
“But I went over to the conference and sure enough, I got nominated for two awards which is super, super cool.”
Cousins said as she was recording the album, she never pictured herself being nominated – her only goal in doing the album was to get her original music out. “I’m very lucky to have such

a great support system, and have everyone (who) has listened to it give me great feedback and end up going to the MusicNL award and receiving a nomination.”
Cousins said she is in good company with the list of nominees.
“Everyone that’s been nominated is so deserving, and just to be in these categories alone with people like Melanie O’Brien – it’s just so humbling,” she said.
Other artists nominated in the Female Artist of the Year include Colleen Power, Janet Cull, Maria Cherwick and Victoria Doyle.
“I’m excited enough to be nominated, and to win would be absolutely amazing, but I think just to be a young singer/songwriter, it’s enough just to be nominated for something like that,” said Cousins.
Cousins will also be performing a showcase at The Ship Pub during MusicNL week.
“I will be performing with a full band the majority of the EP,” said Cousins.
Rachel Cousins was excited when she learned she was up for two awards at the MusicNL Awards to be held at the St. John’s Convention Centre Oct 15.
