Welcome to Kin Corner

Meeting the community’s greatest needs

The Southern Gazette - - Editorial - BY PATSY INKPEN MARYSTOWN, N.L.

The Marystown Kinettes are proud to announce that we are officially the new sub-chapter on the Burin Peninsula for the Children’s Wish Foundation – NL.

The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada is the largest and only all-Canadian wish granting charity dedicated to granting wishes to Canadian children between the ages of three and 17 who are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. We were pleased to hold our first Wish Makers Walk on Oct. 20 in Marystown, with over $6,000 raised.

Appreciation to Jamie and Deanne Gair of Common Cents Consulting for a $1,500 donation and for providing the barbecue and refreshments. Thanks also went out to Art Cluett for a donation of over $600, and to all those who participated in the walk.

Club members also attended the Red Dress Movement vigil on Oct. 11 in honor of all missing and murdered women and young girls in Canada and especially Newfoundland and Labrador. As a women’s group we felt it was important to show our support for families in the area who are dealing with the loss of their loved ones.

On Oct. 14 we were hosts of the Zone D Club Education Seminar. Members gathered in Marystown for a day of Kin learning, sharing and reconnecting. Zone deputy governors Mary Bursey and Roger Cairns, along with their team, conducted information sessions on service work, membership recruitment and retention, as well as Kin Canada’s National and District programs.

We were very fortunate to have a guest speaker from the area, Krista Foote from Burin Peninsula Voice Against Violence. Foote gave an interesting presentation on their work in the community on violence prevention to create social change and build stronger, safer communities. She stressed the message that violence is a society issue not a women’s issue, affecting us all, and we are all responsible for addressing violence prevention.

If you are looking for a way to make a difference in your community, E-mail pat_ink@ hotmail.com or leave a message in our Face book group Marystown Kinette Club. New members are always welcome.
