City considering waiving room rental fees

The Standard (St. Catharines) - - OPINION -

St. Catharines is considering waiving community room rental fees for new neighbourhood groups and is gauging interest in the idea.

The city said it wants to help emerging neighbourhood groups get off the ground by giving them a place to meet and plan their activities.

The idea is to make a room at Russell Avenue Community Centre available on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for groups based in St. Catharines, operating two years or less, non-partisan and inclusive and welcoming in membership.

The proposed pilot project would launch in January.

The city is asking for feedback from groups on the proposed program atingRooms until Nov. 8. City staff will study the results from the survey and make recommendations to city council later this year.

If the room does become available for no rent, additional costs for insurance may apply and can not be waived.
