Business winner to land free downtown rent
Downtown Association’s Win This Space contest opens
People wanting to start their own business are encouraged to enter the St. Catharines Downtown Association’s Win This Space Contest.
The contest started Wednesday. Submissions will be accepted until Nov. 22.
Contest co-ordinator Tracy Jennings said submissions should include a business idea in 500 words or less, including how it would contribute to a vibrant downtown.
A panel of judges will select up to 15 finalists who will then attend business education workshops where they’ll develop business, financial and marketing plans.
Up to seven top finalists will be selected by the judges based on those plans. Those finalists will deliver a pitch to the panel of judges, from which a winner will be chosen and announced at a grand finale event.
The grand prize is a one-year rent sponsorship valued at up to $24,000 — which doesn’t include utilities or leasehold improvements — plus additional prizes from community businesses, including in-kind professional business services to help the winner succeed in its business venture.
The winner will also receive a one-year membership to both the St. Catharines Downtown Association and Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce.
