Scenic Killarney and area will serve as the backdrop for the second Killarney Mountain Lodge Fall Classic on Sept. 24.

Five-, 10-, and 21.1-kilometre races will get underway in the morning and feature plenty of road running, along with some gravel trails, on a course that’s relatively flat, with wildlife and fall colours in view.

The Fall Classic is expected to attract a cross-section of runners, with proceeds from entry fees going to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.

James Morgan, winner of last year’s half-marathon, has returned to defend his title.

“It’s such a treat to come to this part of the country for the beautiful scenery and wilderness, not to mention that running in the fall is a lot of fun,” Morgan said in a release. “I’m returning not only to keep the tradition alive and try and set another personal best time, but also because I love running and I love this event.”

Morgan ran the half-marathon in about 1:48:00 last year and his goal is to beat that time.

“I hope I’ve trained enough to set another personal best,” he said. “I plan to give it my best shot.”

To ensure runners have the ideal diet both before the race, Killarney Mountain Lodge will host a pasta buffet, which general manager Kelly McAree says is also becoming a bit of a tradition.

“We’re excited to get the runners ready for race day by providing them with a pasta dinner ahead of the run, and once again our chef has planned a fish fry post-race to help them build back much needed protein after crossing the finish line,” McAree said. “We’re also hearing the Fall Classic is an event runners are flagging for their race calendars.”

Information about course routes will be posted on the Killarney Mountain Lodge Facebook page in advance.

Registration is available at site/?raceId=14708.

The event is timed and bib numbers will be provided.

Entry fee is $25. Last year, more than $1,100 was raised for the Children’s Wish Foundation.

The winner of the half-marathon receives a sunset cruise on Stormy Night from Killarney Mountain Lodge. Race times: For more information about Killarney Mountain Lodge, visit www.killar or call 1-800461-1117.
