Two men flee after car crashes into pole
A single-car collision on Sudbury Street early Friday morning saw two apparently impaired male occupants of the car flee the scene on foot after damaging a utility pole and leaving the vehicle smoking on a nearby sidewalk.
A witness, who was visiting from Toronto, told The Telegram he came out of the home where he is staying after hearing the crash just before 1 a.m. The damaged car was just metres away, with debris lying on the road and sidewalk.
He said one of the men was trying to drive the car away from the scene, but when it didn’t move, he and another man fled on foot toward Water Street. The witness added that both men appeared intoxicated.
He said the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary arrived on the scene quickly, and a K-9 team tried to track the suspects. Firefighters from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department were called to attend to the smoking vehicle, and spread absorbent material on leaking fluids. The Torontonian commended the quick response by the constabulary, adding that Toronto police would have taken much longer to arrive at a scene such as this one. There was no word about whether any suspects had been apprehended.
