Arnold’s Cove art committee hopes event will be held annually

Arnold’s Cove committee hopes event that pays tribute to writer Ray Guy will be held annually.

Artistry Arnold’s Cove, a not-for-profit volunteer committee formed near the end of

2016, is hosting a celebration of the life of popular Newfoundland writer

Ray Guy this month.

A similar event was held in Arnold’s Cove last April as part of the community’s resettlement celebrations.

Committee co-chair Judy Kelly says the group was formed when members of the community enjoyed last year’s events so much that they wanted to keep them going.

“Some of the things we started we didn’t want to lose, so we formed an arts committee,” explained Kelly, adding that the committee will focus on both performing art and visual arts.

Kelly explained that last year’s Ray Guy celebration was such an enjoyable success that the committee couldn’t stand to lose it.

“He’s our Guy,” she said of the popular writer, journalist and satirist, who was born in Come By Chance but grew up in Arnold’s Cove. Guy died in 2013.

Kelly says the theme of the event is focusing on who Guy was as a man, with stories and presentations by those who knew him best, including his sister Iris Brett.

Guy is remembered, among other things, for his opposition to premier Joseph R. Smallwood, his work with The Evening Telegram and his presence on CBC’S “Here and Now.”

As for Artistry Arnold’s Cove, they say the town has a large pool of local talent, and they hope to put together more events in the future, including a return of the Resettlement Monologues in 2018.

“There’s a lot here to celebrate,” said Kelly.

In addition to Kelly, the committee consists of cochair Fay Matthews, treasurer Roxanne Wareham, events coordinator Leeland Wareham and directors-at-large Tish Trowbridge and Edna Penny.

The upcoming Ray Guy celebration will take place Saturday at St. Michael’s Parish Hall in Arnold’s Cove. Admission to the event is $10.
