East won the king of diamonds but switched to the six of spades that was ducked to the ten. The spade return dislodged the ace as South crossed to dummy with a heart and continued with a trump to the queen. West's heart discard was a disappointment and ensured a two-trick set, N-S 100.

South could have finished down one had he started clubs with the jack.

West declined to offer a heart pre-empt at adverse vulnerability but surely was worth a diamond raise when partner offered a two-level overcall. Whether he raises directly or after North advances to three clubs, three diamonds will be passed out.

South has a difficult opening lead and may begin with the ace of clubs for lack of a better choice. With trump dividing 32 and the jack of spades onside, East will be positioned to bring home the partscore. West could manage nine tricks at hearts on this layout. The six of hearts is advanced for the deuce, seven and king.

After regaining the lead, West continues with the queen, pinning the jack, to avoid three trump losers. If he plays a low heart on the second round, he would be restricted to eight tricks.
