Atlantic Canadians most satisfied with pandemic measures: poll

One in five Canadians say restrictions go too far

-

An Angus Reid poll released Thursday has found the vast majority of Canadians feel provincial government pandemic measures are either just right or could be stricter.

Just 20 per cent say the restrictions should be relaxed more.

The non-profit polling firm did not single out Newfoundland and Labrador, but found that respondents in the Atlantic provinces were most happy with collaborative measures in that region.

On average, 52 per cent of Canadians said they are happy with measures as they are. That number jumps to 58 per cent in the Atlantic region.

“By contrast, those in British Columbia and Manitoba are most likely to say communities their province must be subject to tighter restrictions in order to keep COVID-19 spread down,” a news release stated, “while those in Alberta and Quebec are more likely to advocate for more relaxed restrictions.”

“Alberta and Quebec residents are most likely to say that their province’s restrictions are too strict,” the release said. “Quebec recently increased the maximum capacity of public gatherings from 50 to 250 people, the highest level in the country alongside New Brunswick.”

The firm said it plans to break down its Atlantic Canada numbers in the coming weeks.

The online survey was conducted from Aug. 5-8, among a randomized sample of 1,511 members of Angusreid Forum.
