Victoria County fire chiefs ask for coordinator

The Victoria Standard - - Local News - ANDREW BROOKS

If it were up to the fire departments of Victoria County, there would be a single person in-charge of coordinating fire services throughout the county.

On Oct 17, Greg Organ, chief of the Neil's Harbour-new Haven Volunteer Fire Department, came before council on behalf of the Fire Chiefs of Victoria County to request that the Municipality of the County of Victoria create a Fire Services Coordinator position.

The idea of a coordinator has been raised in the past, but Organ indicated the idea fizzled out for unknown reasons. A presentation by Guysborough County Fire Services Coordinator Shawn Andrews at a Sept. 12 Council Meeting helped to reignite interest in the position after Andrews demonstrated the efficiency and savings their county was experiencing since he took on the role over a decade ago.

Councillors unanimously passed a motion to accept the recommendation for further study.

Warden Bruce Morrison stated that the County is interested in working with the fire departments on the issue but will have to consider the position for next fiscal year since this year's budget is already allocated.
