Ingonish to host 2018 Hike NS Summit
Winning the bid for the 2018 Hike Nova Scotia Summit was the first step. Now organizers are building a volunteer base to help pull it off.
The 7th annual Hike NS Summit will take place at the Keltic Lodge May 13-15, 2018. An Organization Partnership Committee, including Victoria County’s Physical Activity Strategy Coordinator Vince Forrestall, is overseeing the planning.
"My vision is to bring the Summit to nature's home, Ingonish, and really showcase our great natural assets." said Forrestall. “We want to give the participants a great hiking experience and show them the great trails that we have, especially in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park."
The organizing committee’s goal is to draw 200 attendees from across the Maritimes and Quebec. Forrestall hopes to recruit 30 volunteers to help with set up, registration, guiding hikes and more.
A sub-committee headed by Percy Rasmussen has been struck to recruit and coordinate volunteers. An information night will take place Nov. 16 at the Smokey Recreation Society building, next to the outdoor rink in Ingonish. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to attend.
The weekend will include hiking and skills workshops as well as social events such as campfires and films. In addition, the Cape Breton Family Resource Centre Society has partnered to include programming for children, youth and families all weekend. Volunteers get a registration pass so they can participate in the Summit when not volunteering.
