Buchanan Memorial fundraising for new portable ultrasound
An ultrasound machine is essential in modern medicine, but it’s one thing the doctors at Buchanan Memorial Hospital do not have.
So, the hospital’s charitable foundation is selling raffle tickets at stores throughout the county this month and putting up flyers as far as Halifax and the South Shore, hoping to raise $35,000 for a portable model.
“As paramedics, we have seen two-hour transfers (to the Sydney hospital) turn into three and four-hour trips in snowstorms,” said EMT Lyle Donovan, who is helping organize the raffle. “It would be nice to have an ultrasound in the community.”
The $8500 prize is an all-expenses paid week for two at the Keltic Lodge, donated by the hotel, including use of the spa and golf course.
With an ultrasound machine, staff at the 10-bed acute care facility could “check for gallstones and kidney stones, and figure out if you need to be seen by a surgeon, or rule out something like that,” Donovan said.
The added machine might also free up waiting lists at other clinics in Cape Breton.
“If the patients can’t get into Sydney in a timely manner, they’ll be able to get an ultrasound here,” he said.
