Many smiles for L'arche
Tim Hortons locations in Baddeck and We'koqma'q donated proceeds from this year’s Smile Cookie Week campaign to L’arche Cape Breton. Funds raised will go towards construction of the new Gathering Place at the L’arche community in Iron Mines, Cape Breton. Everyone at L’arche Cape Breton is grateful to Tim Hortons owners, Holly and Errol Macinnis, for helping to raise over $8,000 for the project.
The new 3800 square foot Gathering Place at L’arche Cape Breton will serve as a modern, barrier-free setting. It will provide a place where the L’arche community, and friends and associates in the wider community can meet, play, compete, perform, entertain, and educate. It will be the centerpiece of a self-built community that has contributed greatly to life in Cape Breton Island and Nova Scotia.
L’arche is an international organization, founded by Canadian Jean Vanier, creating home and work with people who have intellectual disabilities. Here in Cape Breton, L’arche operates six homes for 25 men and women with disabilities, as well as 25-30 live-in assistants who support them. L’arche Cape Breton also operates seven day programs that provide employment for all the residents, as well as numerous individuals with disabilities who live with their families or with other service providers. These programs include a craft studio, two used clothing stores, a bakery and café, a summer day camp for youth, and an organic garden. None of these valuable programs receive any government support, despite being widely recognized as some of the best employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the province of Nova Scotia.
Holly and Errol Macinnis, owners of Tim Hortons in Baddeck and We'koqma'q invited the folks at L'arche Cape Breton to lunch on December 13th. During the visit they presented the community with the proceeds of Smile Cookie Week 2017.
