Girls varsity basketball finishes season with some heavy hardware from Pugwash
Girls dominate with 2nd and 3rd place finishes; stopped only by Oxford
Victoria County was well represented at this year’s Division Three Girls Basketball Provincials held in Pugwash March 1-3. Cabot Education Centre and Baddeck Academy both sent strong teams to the tournament with high hopes of placing – neither team disappointed.
Cabot defeated Springhill in the first round 67-39 (leading scorers were Malery Whitty (19) Olivia Symes (18)) while Baddeck outplayed Pictou, 81-57. The first-round advancements set up a rematch of the Regionals played weeks earlier. In that contest, Baddeck bested Cabot on their home court to win the tournament. However, Cabot reversed fortunes in Pugwash, handling Baddeck 85-70 in the semi-final to advance to the championship game. Top scorers for Cabot in the semi-finals were Malery Whitty with 18pts and Olivia Symes and Joni Whitty who shot for 16 points each. In the final, the girls fell short against Oxford, 77-51. Oxford has fielded a competitive team for the better part of this decade, becoming the heavy favourite to win at provincials. It was their sixth consecutive NSSAF Division 3 title.
Most impressive for the Cabot Varsity Girls team is their relative youth – not a single player is graduating this season so expect to see much more from this team next year.
Meanwhile, in their consolation round, Baddeck won the bronze medal round against Halifax Grammar, 75-43. Baddeck will say goodbye to six seniors this year (M. Campbell, B. Garland, N. Maccormack, G. Macdonald, M. Mason-parkinson and A. Smith) but they have depth on the bench that will continue to make them a strong team heading into next year.
Congratulations to both teams on an incredibly exciting and successful season.
