by Judy Chang published by Random House Canada, 2013

Read by Judy King, Big Baddeck

Where did you find the book? Library

What is the book about? Empress Dowager Cixi (18351908) ruled China for over forty years. History books have much maligned her. This book sets the record straight about her great achievements and positive legacy for modern China.

What compelled you to pick it up? Displayed on the table at the library in honour of International Women’s Day. Like to read biography, history about all countries of the world. Liked the cover, too.

What did you enjoy about the book? I found it so interesting that this women so far unknown to me was responsible for bringing China into the modern age, through persuasion, not violence – in the face of what happened later with communism, etc. which is more known to me.

What didn’t live up to expectations? Nothing. Overall grade? A+

What will you be reading next? Margaret Laurence’s “A Dance on the Earth: A Memoir”
