Intellectual propriety

The Walrus - - LETTERS -

Thank you for Patrick Warner’s article about the decision by Canadian institutions to stop paying copyright fees (“How Universities Manage to Avoid Paying Writers for Their Work,” thewalrus. ca). Universities say that this exemption is necessary for the sake of their cashstrapped students or for their institutional coffers. But would these same bodies ever dream of claiming an “educational exemption” from paying their electricity bill, or cutting 10 percent off the payment to their food-service provider? Why should writers be the ones who don’t get paid? Gillian O’reilly
