Smelly part of farming fact of life in Wainfleet: Hessels

The Welland Tribune - - NEWS -

Wainfleet might want to change its slogan — Wainfleet: Find your countryside — Ald. Ted Hessels suggested Tuesday night.

He made the comment in light of a letter from Niagara South Federation of Agriculture president Joe Schonberger in the council package.

Schonberger’s letter was in relation to a social media and flier campaign being conducted by residents against farmers spreading manure in the Forks Road area.

“Wainfleet has some of the best farmland not only in Niagara, but in all of Ontario. Agriculture is surely the biggest economic engine in Wainfleet,” the letter said.

It said that is of “paramount importance that township council and staff understand that spreading manure is a normal agriculture practice that has enormous benefits for the soil. People who chose to live in agricultural areas need to be tolerant of normal agricultural practices.”

Schonberger’s letter asked that council and staff inform the concerned citizens who complain about manure spreading that it is a normal farm practice that “must be respected.”

Hessels wondered if the township should add a clause to the slogan, one that reflected the fact that people are in a farming community and there are things associated with that.

“People come here, then all of a sudden there’s the smell, noise and dust of farming. We’re asking people to find their country side, but I’d like them to be aware,” said the alderman, who is a dairy farmer.

Ald. Richard Dykstra, a cash crop farmer, asked what the slogan should be changed to.

“Should we say something like, ‘We stink here’ or something like that?” he said, to laughs from residents in council chambers

While Dykstra was joking, Mayor April Jeffs suggested another change to Wainfleet’s slogan would be costly in terms of having to change business cards and other items.

Dykstra said anyone who moves to the community and doesn’t realize what they are getting into, a change in slogan wouldn’t help them.
