Niagara music to gather for Drop the Mic
The end of August will bring a new talent competition for Niagara’s bands and singers, with $5,000 in prizes up for grabs.
Local event planners A.S.I. Events will host the six-hour Drop the Mic contest Aug. 31 at the new Skyland Club in St. Catharines. Artists of all styles and genres are being sought.
Among the prizes is paid recording time for a single, radio interview and air time for one single, and a fully-funded music video shoot.
A.S.I. Events owner Dalton Patterson says about 37 artists have already signed up, including hip-hop, folk and classical singers.
“It’s just to get more exposure for the Niagara talent we have,” he says. “It’s a mix of all genres.”
A former event planner in Toronto, Patterson moved to Niagara for school a year ago and was impressed with the local scene.
“I did a bit of research to see what events are here and what’s available to be done,” he says. “Niagara region has a lot of music festivals already, but none that I see that incorporate all the genres into it.”
Registration is free, though entrants are asked to promote the event on social media.
Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, available through ASIEvents Niagara@hotmail.com. Skyland Club is located at 525 Welland Avenue, St. Catharines.
