When Erica Summers first learned of the Fight Like a Girl run, the Corner Brook resident was moved to action. The run is taking place in Fort Langley, B.C., this Sunday, but it also has a virtual component that enables people to participate no matter where they are.

When Erica Summers first learned of the Fight Like a Girl run, the Corner Brook resident was moved to action.

“This event really spoke to me,” she said of the run, an initiative of the British Columbiabased Run Like a Girl Adventure Inc., in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The run is taking place in Fort Langley, B.C., this Sunday, but it also has a virtual component that enables people to participate no matter where they are.

Summers has been running for about five years. For her it started as a challenge to run the Tely 10 and after that she was hooked.

She’s part of a local group known as the Humber River Runners that does regular group runs a couple of times a week. The group has 143 members — men and women of all ages and all fitness levels — who all love to run.

“The fitness aspect is fantastic, but the people you meet along the way definitely kind of makes it for me,” said Summers. “I’ve met so many great people and some of the other runners I’ve met are some of my best friends.

“We truly enjoy getting out whether it’s late in the evening, early in the morning, rain, snow, sunshine and just to hang out, just run together, just chat.”

So, wanting to get involved in the Fight Like a Girl Run, she thought what better group to reach out to than her running friends?

About of dozen members of the group will complete a 5-K or 10-K run on Sunday morning and few more will run later in the day. The plan is to start at 9 a.m. and leave from the area of the Marble Mountain parking lot and run along Marble Drive in Steady Brook.

Summers said there are a lot of types of cancer and everybody knows someone directly or indirectly affected by the disease.

She said participating in the run is a great way to get out and raise funds for research. “And put some money towards finding a cure for just one of those types of cancer.”

The group will contribute through registration fees and the collection of sponsors.
