Corner Brook’s Andrew Bruce wins junior male golfer of the year
Corner Brook golfer turned in solid season on the links.
Andrew Bruce looks pretty calm and collected on the golf course, but he would be first to tell you that he endured a fair amount of stress throughout the summer.
2017 was an important season for the budding junior golfer from Corner Brook because he was focused on earning a golf scholarship that would allow him to pursue the game at a higher level when he graduated from high school.
Being named 2017 provincial junior male golfer of the year by Golf Newfoundland and Labrador for the second-straight year has taken away all that stress and he couldn’t be happier.
“It’s always nice to be recognized for how hard you worked,” Bruce said Wednesday. “I worked really hard not only get a chance to win this award again but also work towards a golf scholarship.
“This summer was one of the hardest summers for me because there was a lot of stress because I wanted to get the golf scholarship so bad that it was a lot of work,” he added.
He felt he got off to a pretty good start but there was a threeweek period late in the season where he was involved with a number of events that things didn’t go his way so he had some anxious moments, but in the end he had the results that he needed to achieve his goal.
He had a great year that saw him claim top honours in the Royal LePage provincial junior boys golf championship, win the Tely Junior Golf Tour crown for his age group and placed 15th overall as a member of Team NL at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.
A lot of hard work produced an impressive resume for his final year of junior golf eligibility and it couldn’t have happened at a better time for him.
He has been rewarded for his effort by accepting golf scholarship to play at the University of Victoria for the 2018-2019 season.
UVIC golfers develop their game through the collegiate circuit in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and provide budding golfers an opportunity to work on their game 12 months of the year.
He has forgotten those stressful times and looks forward to taking his game across the country.
He’s looking forward to being able to swing the clubs 12 months of the year.
