Ron­ald Smith charged with Benoit’s Cove video store rob­bery

A Bay of Is­lands man has been charged with last week’s rob­bery of Evoy’s Video in Benoit’s Cove. Ron­ald Smith, 49, ap­peared in pro­vin­cial court in Cor­ner Brook on Fri­day morn­ing. He’s been charged with rob­bery with vi­o­lence, forcible con­fine­ment and be­ing dis­guised with in­tent. Smith was re­leased fol­low­ing the ap­pear­ance af­ter mak­ing a per­sonal pledge to the court of $2,000. Con­di­tions of his re­lease in­clude that he re­side in John’s Beach (his cur­rent ad­dress was not men­tioned in court).

A press re­lease is­sued by the Royal Cana­dian Mounted Po­lice in Cor­ner Brook later Fri­day said that Smith’s ar­rest came as a re­sult of an in­ves­ti­ga­tion by its se­ri­ous crime unit.

It’s al­leged Smith en­tered the story at 9 p.m. on Jan. 4 with his face cov­ered and fled the scene with an undis­closed amount of money. Smith’s next court ap­pear­ance has been set for Jan. 30.
