New Heidelberg rec. facility now nearing completion

AFTER YEARS OF FUNDRAISING and lobbying for a new community building, members of the Heidelberg Parks and Recreation Association are happy to see the project on Lobsinger Line is getting closer to completion.

Scott Macgregor says he still can’t believe there is an end in sight.

“We have a building. It’s up. It happened. The people that have been on the committee in the past, and that are here now, have stayed true to their word,” said the rec. association member. “We did what we said we were going to do. There is a family that moved to Ottawa, and she was the president of the rec. committee a few years ago. They moved away, but she still asks how things are going. She put in her two or three years of trying to make this happen. It wasn’t an easy thing to do, let me tell you.”

For the association, it is all about the community.

“If there are any events that locals want to have at the park, there is a clean, fun enjoyable facility for them to be able to use,” said Macgregor.

Right now, it has just come down to the final details and finishing touches inside the pavilion.

“It is just painting and a bit of flooring, a couple of light bulbs, nothing crazy. I got to go in and do a tour and there were guys pouring the step outside one of the front doors, and I haven’t seen if they have done the concrete for the shelter portion yet. It is odds and ends left to do. The little details,” he said.

Macgregor was given the opportunity to tour the inside of the new building and he says it is a big, big improvement on the condemned structure that used to be standing in the same spot.

“It looks amazing. When you compare it to what was there, it looks like a palace. It is a very nice little space for the community. The square footage of the little hall that we have got, is ideal for what we need,” he shared. “The washrooms are nice – they aren’t falling in and there are no raccoons living in it. That is a good thing. There is the nice little kitchenette. It is warm - it doesn’t have a breeze going through. My impression was that it is pretty cool.”

Funded primarily through community donations and the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, the project has been in the works for the better part of a decade.

And even the recreation association has gotten a new meeting space out of it.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet. I think it will as soon as we have a meeting there, then I will let you know after it has sunk in,” said Macgregor. “We are so used to meeting at the tavern that it will be nice that we have a little spot to meet. It is a byproduct of the whole thing.”

The association is planning a grand opening ceremony for all those who made the project happen. It is planned for sometime in the summer.

The Build a Better Booth campaign was successful for the Heidelberg Rec. Association, with a new facility now nearing the finishing stages. A grand opening ceremony is planned for the summer.
