“We all know decriminalization is a big money grab for government coffers at the expense of the health of our young people...” Carol Mary Awrey
To the Editor, Re: Opioid crisis (Editor’s Note, Observer, Oct. 19/17) FINALLY SOMEONE’S GOT IT right. We all know decriminalization is a big money grab for government coffers at the expense of the health of our young people and the not so young.
Some of us are old enough to remember the Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev taking his shoe off and hammering the table with it at the United Nations and hollering, “We will take your nation without firing a shot.” He was referring to the youth of both Canada and the United States, being contaminated, mentally and physically, by drugs.
One can only imagine the cost to the health care system that drug addiction will bring upon us.
I presented Members of Parliament with some 300 letters expressing the suffering families were enduring over drug addiction of their loved ones about 40 years ago. I would also like to state that the decriminalization of marijuana was shelved 40 years ago by government officials with strong family values.
I do not believe the money added to the coffers will be worth the price that we will most certainly have to pay for the mental and physical destruction of our youth. Do you?
Thank you for showing us your strong and truthful values in this drug situation. CAROL MARY AWREY | ST CLEMENTS
