Thornhill artist wins chance to meet Queen
Sonja Csik’s Remembrance Day drawing took on thousands of international entries
I’m looking forward to going to Buckingham Palace and riding a tour bus.”
On Nov. 7, Thornhill’s Sonja Csik is headed to Buckingham Palace to meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II after winning a Remembrance Day poster contest.
After winning at the local, provincial and national level of the Royal Canadian Legion National Poster Contest, the 11-year-old student at St. Michael’s Academy finished in second place in the international competition securing the opportunity to travel to England with her mother to meet the Queen.
“I always saw the Royals on TV, and I always wanted to be like them,” said Sonja. “And now I get to meet the Queen!”
Her poster will also be displayed on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for the next year.
Her Lest We Forget poster portrays poppies that are withering, turning black and falling to the ground, a beautiful reminder of the importance of remembering those that fought for freedom.
“It’s an important day that shouldn’t be forgotten,” said Sonja, “like, because
Remembrance Day is really
important to me because the soldiers died for us so that we could have a good life,” she said.
She is the only budding artist from Canada who will make the trip to England courtesy of the competition. “We were very surprised,” Sonja’s proud mother Timea explained. “Her art is displayed in the [Canadian] War Museum.”
Her poster was chosen as the second best from more than 1,000 entries from 47 countries around the world. She received $2,000 to cover her travel expenses, as well.
Sonja said she has been drawing since she was around six years old and wasn’t sure how she would fare in the competition because a lot of her classmates at her arts school were also entering.
“I felt really nervous,” she said. “There are a lot of good artists at my school who were entering, so I didn’t really know.”
Sonja is scheduled to travel to England this month and meet the Queen at a special awards presentation.
“I’m really excited,” she said. “I’m looking forward to going to Buckingham Palace and riding a tour bus.”
