Try to survive the 2nd annual Zombie Adventure

Tillsonburg News - - FRONT PAGE - Chris abboTT

Will you be a survivor? Or infected by the zombies?

Or maybe you want to volunteer to be one of the zombie sin Till son bur g’ s 2nd annual Zombie Adventure, presented by the Tillsonburg & Area Optimist Club at Memorial Park on Saturday, Sept. 23.

“We’re excited to do it again,” said Optimist Club’s Lindsay Munroe, a member of the organizing committee. “We had a lot of the community asking us to do a second round, so we’ve taken a lot of the feedback we got last year and we’re trying to make a few tweaks this year.”

New this year, entry into Memorial Park’s Zombie Adventure staging area is free on the 23rd with fun activities planned from 1-5 p.m.

“For anyone who wants to come and check us out,” said Munroe. “If you want, you can cheer on people going out on the Adventure, and just hang out if you don’t want to do it. Last year entrance to the park was only if you were participating. This year, anybody can join us, but paid participants are the ones who go around the trail on the Adventure.”

The first heat leaves Memorial Park at 2 p.m., and they will be followed by waves of participants every 15 minutes until 3:45 p.m.

“It gives everybody a chance to have a similar experience out there rather than having people all grouped together.

“Some people don’t want to go in the first heat, so we’re kind of spread out right now. We still have room in most of the heats to join. It’s funny - some want to be the first ones out, and some want to stay back and wait until the third or fourth heat.”

Each participant will have a limited number of lives - special life ribbons that zombies will be seeking. Lose your lives, and your adventure is over, although you are welcome to continue on the Adventure until completion of the course. Survivors received a special ‘survivor’ certificate last year.

“If you want to bring cash, there will be extra lives you can purchase out on the trails, as well as water,” munroe noted. new this year, donations can be made to the Helping Hand Food bank, which will also earn you an extra life ribbon.

“Participants are encouraged to bring a food bank donation and they get an extra life which they can use out on the trail, so it gives them more chances of returning with three lives.

“Some people lost their lives very quickly last year... our zombies were good at strategizing. so hopefully this give participants an extra adventure, as well help top up the food bank because i know they’re getting low at this time of year.”

Tickets are $25 for adults at the gate, or $20 in advance. Children 12-and-under are $5.

Special rates apply for families - $40 for two adult tickets in advance and two children tickets. For advance tickets contact tillsonburgzombieadven or follow them on Facebook (tillsonburg Zombie adventure).

“So if you take advantage of the family package - and get your tickets in advance - you’d be getting your two children in free, which would be great. it’s a nice deal. We’re hoping to bring out more families this year. last year our youngest participant was two years old and our oldest was in their 70s. We hit a large target audience last year, so we’re hoping to do that again and bring in lots of people.”

The 2017 course, which munroe estimated about 40 minutes in length for slow walkers, will be similar to last year’s and utilize part of the town’s trail system, starting and finishing in memorial park.

“It’s a good walk, not hilly. and it is walkable with strollers. people can do it at their own pace - they can walk it or run it.

“It’s a good family event. last year, there were some people who were a little nervous on their way out. definitely it was driven by the kids. some said, ‘i’m here because my kid dragged me here.’ but i think what everybody said after, the parents returned with just as much enthusiasm as the kids.”

Zombie volunteers are also in high demand.

“We’re always looking for more zombie volunteers,” said munroe. “dress up and be zombies! We do provide the makeup for zombies, if they wish, or they can do their own. We have Fanshawe College Hairstyling doing all of our makeup this year. so if you want to volunteer, contact us via email or the Facebook page - that’s the best way to get in touch with us for volunteers or tickets.

“Having it in september, we’re hoping it won’t be as hot as it was last year (in July),” munroe added.
