THUMBS UP/ THUMBS DOWN
To the B.C. Lottery Corp., for taking bets on the outcome of the U.S. election. That amounts to profiting off our neighbours’ misery. To fugitive Gregory Mendoza of New Mexico, for ending his time on the run by stealing a doughnut. That allowed police who responded to the report of the pilfered treat to discover that Mendoza was wanted on 10 charges in New Mexico and several more in Nevada, including cruelty to animals. To a 32-year-old Newfoundland man, for trying to break into the West Coast Correctional Centre in Stephenville, N.L. While it’s admirable he was trying to avoid the intermediate steps of being arrested, tried and sentenced to prison, he should follow standard procedures. The man, who was intoxicated, faces a charge of mischief. To Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, for launching their The Circus Wants The Circus Back campaign in response to the incessant and demeaning usage of the words “circus” and “clown” during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
