We must not ignore dark parts of history

Re: “Words and stories are reinterpre­ted,” “Look into the dark corners of history,” columns, June 15. Neil Godbout’s column suggests that white society, history, culture and law remain intact despite removal of statues of historical importance in New Orleans and Vancouver.

White society, culture and law are everchangi­ng, but history is what it is. To remove these reminders of darker corners is not only disingenuo­us but dangerous.

Catherine Frazee’s article on the same page regarding the history of euthanasia says it succinctly: “Those who would forbid us to speak of this history can only fuel doubts about whether its lessons have been learned.” P.G. Leith Victoria
