Cyclist in critical condition after crash
A 55-year-old Nanaimo cyclist was in critical condition after colliding with a cube van on the Nanaimo Parkway on Friday. The crash occurred about 6 a.m. The cyclist was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and then airlifted to Victoria General hospital.
“While early in the investigation investigators have determined the cyclist was not wearing a helmet, had no lights on his bike and was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien.
The driver of the cube van was not injured. Police are awaiting a mechanical inspection on the van, O’Brien said.
The southbound lanes of the road were closed for several hours as police collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
