Po­lice shoot­ing leaves Is­land man dead

In­de­pen­dent in­ves­ti­ga­tors are prob­ing a po­lice-in­volved shoot­ing that left a 35-year-old man dead in Qualicum Beach on Thurs­day.

About 6:30 a.m., Ocean­side RCMP were asked to as­sist paramedics as they at­tended a call about a man who had re­port­edly stabbed him­self in­side a ve­hi­cle on the 39000 block of In­land Is­land High­way.

Through 911 calls, the at­tend­ing of­fi­cers were ad­vised that the man was run­ning down the high­way and that some­one was try­ing to re­strain him.

“Upon po­lice at­ten­dance, a strug­gle en­sued between po­lice and a male and shot(s) were fired by po­lice,” ac­cord­ing to B.C. RCMP.

Paramedics im­me­di­ately at­tended the scene in or­der to pro­vide med­i­cal as­sis­tance to the man. “The 35-year-old man has since suc­cumbed to his in­juries,” said po­lice.

Two po­lice of­fi­cers suf­fered mi­nor in­juries dur­ing the strug­gle and were taken to hospi­tal for med­i­cal at­ten­tion.

The In­de­pen­dent In­ves­ti­ga­tions Of­fice of B.C. has been de­ployed. The of­fice investigates of­fi­cer-re­lated in­ci­dents that re­sult in death or se­ri­ous harm in or­der to de­ter­mine whether an of­fi­cer might have com­mit­ted an of­fence.

With the mat­ter now un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion by the IIO, po­lice said they will not re­lease fur­ther in­for­ma­tion.
