Times Colonist - - The Capital And Vancouver Island -

A Victoria police officer was assaulted by a man allegedly trying to break into an Esquimalt home early Sunday.

The officer responded to a call from a resident who saw a man on her back porch in the 1100 block of Lyall Street about 4 a.m. The woman said the man looked like he was trying to break in.

The officer arrived on scene and approached the man at the back door. The officer was attacked and a struggle ensued.

The officer was assaulted with a weapon, although Victoria police did not give any details.

Despite his injuries, the officer was able to restrain the man. More officers arrived and helped in the arrest.

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Esquimalt man was taken to police cells, where he had a telebail hearing. He is charged with assaulting a police officer and assaulting a police officer with a weapon.
