TFCA Awards Gala

Toronto Life - - Editor’s Letter -

Jan. 9, The Carlu

Host Cameron Bailey kicked off the biggest night in Toronto’s film scene by quoting “president Oprah” and “prime minister Sarah Polley,” and riffing on post-Weinstein malaise. But it was still a night of rapturous celebration: filmmaker Ashley McKenzie took home the best Canadian film prize (and $100,000) for Werewolf, an indie flick about a homeless couple in Cape Breton. Accepting an award for The Florida Project, actor Bria Vinaite read a note from its director, Sean Baker: “Everyone go smoke a blunt and party!” Taking the mike, Bailey joked, “Mayor Tory, where are the blunts?”
