Reinstate plastic-bag ban to start saving the planet

-

Re Barn owls struggling to adapt to cities’ mean streets, May 18, and Province vows to help GE workers ‘as quickly as possible,’ May 19 Thank you for highlighting the woes of animals sharing this planet with those of us who suffer from toxic fallout. Your coverage recognized that the plight of barn owls is as worthy as that of humans in Peterborough.

Not to mention the turtles being strangled by our love affair with plastic and convenience, the twin gods of our lives, on remote Henderson Island.

The planet is in triage. It is our responsibility to save what we can, so thank you for the sad and gruesome reminders taking place in our backyards and in distant locations.

Maybe some limits to thoughtless consumption we all know about and practice would help?

So how about that ban on plastic bags, Toronto? Yes, it was in place and it was reversed but, seriously, it was a good idea. Other cities do it. India just banned all plastics in its capital. We don’t because? We can live with a little inconvenient thoughtfulness.

Just an idea on behalf of the beset beasts of Henderson Island and the ocean. Plastic, like diamonds, is forever, but not in a good way. Eva Bednar, Toronto
