Shapovalov drops Next Gen finale
MILAN— Canadian Denis Shapovalov dropped his final match at the Next Gen ATP Finals, losing to top-seeded Andrey Rublev in five sets — 4-1, 3-4 (8), 4-3 (2), 0-4, 4-3 (3). Shapovalov of Richmond Hill served eight aces but converted just three of 13 breakpoint chances in the inaugural event for the world’s top under-22 players, using untraditional scoring. At 18, Shapovalov — who finished with a1-2 record — was the youngest player in the field. Competition ends Saturday at Fiera Milano stadium.
