Shapo­valov drops Next Gen fi­nale

MI­LAN— Cana­dian De­nis Shapo­valov dropped his fi­nal match at the Next Gen ATP Fi­nals, los­ing to top-seeded An­drey Rublev in five sets — 4-1, 3-4 (8), 4-3 (2), 0-4, 4-3 (3). Shapo­valov of Richmond Hill served eight aces but con­verted just three of 13 break­point chances in the in­au­gu­ral event for the world’s top un­der-22 play­ers, us­ing un­tra­di­tional scor­ing. At 18, Shapo­valov — who fin­ished with a1-2 record — was the youngest player in the field. Com­pe­ti­tion ends Satur­day at Fiera Mi­lano sta­dium.
