Vathje captures World Cup silver
LAKE PLACID, N.Y.— Canada’s Elisabeth Vathje won a silver medal in the first World Cup skeleton race of the Olympic season Thursday, trailing winner Janine Flock by about a second. Vathje, from Calgary, got off the ice and leaped into her mother’s arms in celebration. “She’s going to be at all the races this year,” Vathje said of mom Rita. Vathje hasn’t yet qualified for February’s Winter Games, but the result was a major boost in that effort. Vancouver’s Jane Channell finished sixth.
