Ath­letes have good run at games

Run­ners Hud­son Grimshaw-Surette and Ja­cob Sy­monds were at the Canada Games


Two ath­letes from south­west­ern Nova Scotia had a good run at the Canada Sum­mer Games in Win­nipeg.

Yar­mouth County run­ner Hud­son Grimshaw-Surette fin­ished fifth in Fri­day’s 800-me­tre fi­nal, post­ing a time of 1:51.76. (Marco Arop of Al­berta took the gold in 1:49.23.)

Three days ear­lier, GrimshawSurette had placed third out of six run­ners in his heat with a time of 1:52.86.

Also on Fri­day, Aug. 4, Grimshaw- Surette and Shel­burne County’s Ja­cob Sy­monds were part of the Nova Scotia 4 X 400me­tre re­lay team that placed sixth with a time of 3:19.17. (Bri­tish Columbia won the gold in 3:13.18.)

In their heat on Tues­day, the Nova Sco­tians had run 3:18.43, sec­ond be­hind Man­i­toba.

Run­ning in the in­di­vid­ual 400- me­tre fi­nal on Thurs­day, Aug. 3, Sy­monds was dis­qual­i­fied when he nicked the lane next to him with his foot. Had it counted, his time of 49.05 would have been a per­sonal best. (Al­berta’s Austin Cole won the gold in 47.25.)

In the 400 heats three days ear­lier, Sy­monds had run 50.27.

Week one ath­letes on Team Nova Scotia ar­rived back in Nova Scotia on Aug. 5.
