Learn, laugh, love, happy and smile.

Those are just a few of the encouraging words kids at the Digby library were painting on rocks as part of a March break activity.

Kids in Digby had the chance to paint kindness rocks at the Isaiah W. Wilson Memorial Library March 14.

“The kids seemed to have a lot of fun and they learned a bit about kindness at the same time,” said Joanna Jarvis, senior library clerk at the Isiah W. Wilson Memorial Library.

Kids were asked to paint one rock for themselves and another to place somewhere in the community with an encouraging word written on it for someone else to find.

Jarvis wanted to try something new for the activity planned for March break.

She got the idea from a Windsor, Nova Scotia, teacher who started a program called Travelling Kindness Rocks. The Windsor woman paints mandalas and kind words on rocks, then ships them globally to people who need some encouragement.

Jarvis decided to change it up a little to make it easier for kids to do in a short period of time, she said.

“I think it went very well, everyone participated, and we had a great turnout,” Jarvis said.

Linda Gregory loves the library in Digby and that’s exactly why she volunteered to help with the activity.

“The library staff in Digby are the best, they do great things. So, if there’s ever anything I can do to help, I try to do what I can,” said Gregory, who is the deputy warden of the municipality.

She was glad to see families come to try out the activity and support the library.

“They were learning about art and encouragement and I think that’s really important for kids to learn about.” Children had lots of themes in their painted rocks, such as a rainbow rock and one that said smile.
