Canadians hang tough at the Pan Am Games
Calgary’s Ellen Pennock fought her way to a breakthrough sixthplace performance (1:58:42) at the Pan American Games Triathlon in Toronto. Edmonton’s Paula Findlay finished ninth (1:59:55), and Guelph, Ont.’s Joanna Brown finished in 13th spot (2:02:04). Chile’s Barbara Riveros outran the field (35:20) to take the gold medal in 1:57:18. “The run went out quick and my legs just weren’t quite ready for the first kilometre,” said Pennock. “My coach says I always work better from the back end so it was nice to get a negative split. I just enjoyed the cheering from that hometown crowd coming in. It is something I will never forget.”
Caledon, Ont.’s Andrew Yorke laid it all on the line in Toronto, but with 2 km to go and running in second, the chase pack upped the pace and he wound up in seventh (1:49:31). Tyler Mislawchuk of Oak Bluff, Man. raced with a broken rib and managed a 10th place finish (1:49:54). Oakville, Ont.’s Kyle Jones did not finish due to mechanical issues during the bike ride. Mexico’s Crisanto Grajales (1:48:58) edged out American Kevin Mcdowell (1:48:59) for the victory. “I just felt today this is my place, my fans, and I went for it. I wanted it today. I gave it all I had. It just wasn’t enough,” said Yorke.
