Mcquaid takes second at the Subaru Ironman Whistler
In her debut over the distance, Melanie Mcquaid was second at Subaru Ironman Canada. As cold blowing rain pelted the swim and the early part of the bike, with temperatures hovering around 9 C, a number of athletes were forced to withdraw with hypothermia. Mcquaid came out of the water in third, grabbing the lead very early on the bike and took that through 37 km of the run. With just a few kilometres to go, Mcquaid was passed by American Danielle Mack who won in 9:46:19. Mcquaid crossed the line in 9:48:23. Penticton’s Jen Annett continued her string of podium finishes over the full distance grabbing third in 9:55:06.
In the men’s race, 42-year-old Ukrainian Viktor Zyemtsev ran his way to the front with a 2:54 marathon to take the win in 8:49:46. South African Kyle Buckingham was second in 8:50:30 after leading most of the day. American Justin Daerr rounded out the podium in 8:54:45.–
