The Return of the Ontario Women’s Triathlon
With the Subaru Iron Girl Canada Women’s Triathlon in Grimsby, Ont. selling out months ahead of the event, it’s apparent that the demand for women’s-only triathlons is on the rise. To help satisfy that need, Multisport Canada is resurrecting the Ontario Women’s Triathlon after a one-year absence, continuing the tradition founded over 20 years ago in Milton, Ont. by Tina and Ed Braam.
“We acquired the OWTS [Ontario Women’s Triathlon Series] in part because MSC has always had the philosophy that our races should have a warm and welcoming atmosphere where athletes of all abilities can enjoy the day with us,” said John Salt, founder and president of Multisport Canada. “We know that more and more women are participating in mass participation events and there is a segment who prefer to race in a women’s-only environment. Given our philosophy and that need it was a very obvious fit.”
Paolina Allan is the honourary race director to help encourage more women to participate in triathlons.
“Having a women’s-only triathlon event helps to bring out more women to the sport, if there are intimidation factors or barriers, then a women’s-only race will really help with that,” said Allan, a former pro triathlete and current elite cyclist. “We plan on putting on clinics at Georgina and various locations. My intention is to have women come out and give little talks on how they balance a full-time job, a few kids, their children’s sports, running the household and how they manage to fit training in.”
“Being surrounded by women is very empowering. We are a great network for each other, supportive of each other, encouraging and fundamentally I think we learn from each other,” added Allan.
The Ontario Women’s Triathlon takes place on Sept. 10 in Georgina, Ont.
