Lionel San­ders sets the fastest time ever recorded at an Iron­man race, fin­ish­ing in 7: 44: 29. A guy who, a few years ago was al­ways dead last out of the wa­ter in the pro race man­ages to come out of the wa­ter in 16th. He then posts the sec­ond-fastest bike split ever at an Iron­man race, fol­low­ing it all up with a 2:42 marathon. This af­ter two dis­ap­point­ing world cham­pi­onship ap­pear­ances in Mooloolaba and Kona. It was all a very, very pleas­ant sur­prise.
