The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has closed the file on a case concerning a 56-year-old man who suffered serious injuries while lodged in cells at the Hawkesbur y OPP detachment. SIU Director Tony Loparco stated in the file brief that the investigation determined and confirmed the injuries were self-inflicted and not the result of any altercation with police. The SIU is an armslength agency that investigates cases involving police where death or serious injuries have occurred. Its file brief on the Hawkesbur y case states that police arrested the man Aug. 30 2017 as a result of a domestic disturbance call. The man was placed in a cell and while there he first struck his head against a cell wall and then ran head-first against the cell door bars, falling over backwards as a result and striking his head on the concrete floor. The man was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
