DOLLAR FOR A BEER?
Premier Doug Ford’s “buck a beer” challenge marked its official start August 27, but just three Ontario’s breweries picked up the gauntlet and now it’s down to two after the Labour Day weekend. Loblaw’s President’s Choice, and two small independent brewers, Barley Days and Cool Beer Brewing offered their beers at a dollar a can or bottle in return for the provincial government’s offer of premium shelf space at the LCBO. But Loblaw’s has now decided to step away from the challenge. There is also just a limited number of LCBO outlets stocking the dollar-a-beer brands. Ontario’s craft brewers, including the four in P-R and the major breweries, have passed on the challenge because they would lose money on every bottle or can.
