20-YEAR PLAN TO IMPROVE WATER TREATMENT PLANT
The Water Treatment Plant 20-Year Strategic Plan was recently presented at the Hawkesbury municipal council.
The study’s purpose was to assess what improvements need to be made to the water treatment plant, in the next 20 years, to get it up to par. The study, which was completed by J.L. Richards, provided a history of the water treatment plant, an evaluation of the plant, and most importantly a 20-year timeline to make all the necessary improvements to the plant. A rough estimate of 17.85 million dollars was calculated to cover all the essential work, over the 20-year period.
Some of the work includes improvements to the filter and backwash system and upgrades to raw water supply clarifiers, and to the chemical storage and feed systems. This project is made possible by UIF $MFBO 8BUFS BOE 8BTUFXBUFS 'VOE B CJMBUFSBM BHSFFNFOU CFUXFFO UIF 'FEFSBM government and the province of Ontario.
In the end, the federal government will finance 50 per cent of the project, while the provincial government will fund 25 per cent. This leads the Town of Hawkesbury to budget for the remaining 25 per cent. The water treatment plant was established in 1953 and its last major upgrade was in 1996. Other upgrades, such as to the control system and the meters, were made in 2002, while chemical storage and feed system upgrades were made from 2004 to 2016.
