It’s a great time to give tennis a try

- By Don cameron

If a sport can be hot at a specific time, one could say tennis is now hot in Canada and Nova Scotia.

Our most famous Canadian tennis player, Milos Raonic is now a serious top-10 threat in all professional men’s tournaments, and Eugenie Bouchard has proven she can also compete with the world’s best.

The tennis world saw at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open that some of the top teenaged players are also Canadian, which bodes well for the future of top-level tennis in Canada.

The Davis Cup returned to Halifax for the second year where the top Canadian tennis players battled with players from competing countries for global Davis Cup positioning. The Canadian team overpowered the Chile team 5-0 over the three days in front of boisterous and appreciative fans.

Recently, the Truro Tennis Club enjoyed its annual awards day picnic after a very busy and successful summer. However, outdoor play will continue well into October, and perhaps November if weather allows as it did last year.

The number of youths playing tennis at the club and the Cougar Dome has been increasing each year. Several young boys and girls under age 10 are having a blast as they increase their skills and have quickly become some of the best players in Atlantic Canada. Truro has tennis facilities that are second to none as well as outstanding coaching for young and old.

The fall season is a wonderful time to be outside playing tennis. There’s something special about the sound and feel of hitting the ball to the opponent’s side of the court on a warm, sunny day or under the lights at night. The sport has universal appeal as it doesn’t require any previous skill level and doesn’t require much equipment or added costs.

The Truro Tennis Club can

provide the use of tennis racquets and balls for those that would like to give it a try and play at no cost for their first time or two. Club members are available to assist and lessons are available from coaches.

This year the Truro Tennis Club has reduced the cost of annual memberships by 50 per cent to $90 to encourage new members. As well, new players and college students can purchase monthly passes for $25.

Tennis is a fun game that most can play for the majority of their lifetime. It takes a relatively short time to play, provides great exercise, is reasonably priced, and is a social game where you can meet many new people. The only other Maritime communities that have outdoor and indoor courts available to the public year-round is Halifax and Fredericton.

To give tennis a try this fall, or for information on becoming involved in the sport, either at the Truro Tennis Club or the CougarDome, call 902-8434171.
