Remembering the MacKenzies

Carl MacKenize guided the fortunes of the Truro Raceway from the early 1940s until retirement as general manager in 1974.

During those formative years, Carl’s wife, Margaret, assisted and supported him in his duties. It was during MacKenzie’s tenure that night racing was first introduced in Truro on a continuous basis as well as the use of photo-finish equipment and the public tote board system.

MacKenzie set up the first electronic timing device in Nova Scotia, forged ahead with the on-going use of a starting gate as well as pioneering win, place and show wagering at the Nova Scotia track .

Missing from top class action

With the Cecil Ladner Invitational on tap tonight at Red Shores Charlottetown, two of the regulars will be absent from Truro’s top class action tomorrow.

His Boy Elroy and Goliath Reigns will be lining up this evening in the 11th race, vying for the lion’s share of the $5,000 purse.

New shooters added to tomorrow’s fast class include Tammy MacKay’s Allstar Man, Heart and Soul for Riley Farms, Chris Covin’s Smile Style and a pair out of the Shive camp – Mybrothergeorge and Weather Hanover.

Returning players Distinctiv Rusty and Badlandia make for a field that is sure to show natural speed and versatility from gate to wire.

Chase the Ace pot growing June 18 winner: Sophia Sowinski ($127).

Sophia drew the three of spades. Pot now stands at $1,628.

Who won the day – June 18 Danny Romo and the Romo Stable captured the attention of race fans last Sunday with new speed badges on two of his young pupils.
