Man charged with leaving toddler alone in locked car
BEDFORD — Police have charged a Bedford man with abandoning a child and criminal negligence after officers had to break a window in a car to help a toddler locked inside. According to a Halifax Regional Police news release, officers responded to a report of a child locked in an unattended car in a parkade on University Avenue on the afternoon of Aug. 18.
Police found the car and saw the child in the back seat, buckled into a car seat. The windows were rolled up and there were no adults in the immediate area. The officers saw
that the child was crying, sweating and in distress. They broke the windows and paramedics were able to check and medically clear the child. The Department of Community Services was contacted and attended the scene.
The father later showed up at the vehicle.
As part of the investigation, the 44-year-old man was arrested on Saturday. He is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court Oct. 17 to face the charges.
