Province an­nounces $50,000 in fund­ing for Sco­tia Pool

A cheque for $50,000 was pre­sented to the Sco­tia Pool So­ci­ety on Tues­day.

Nova Sco­tia Min­is­ter of Agri­cul­ture Keith Col­well and Deputy Premier Karen Casey were at the Sco­tia/ Glen W. Smith Pool to an­nounce the fund­ing for in­fra­struc­ture im­prove­ments.

Glenda Bower, chair of the Sco­tia Pool So­ci­ety, said the fund­ing will help fin­ish work be­ing done to the brick on the ex­te­rior of the 45-year-old build­ing.

“We had to prove we could op­er­ate Sco­tia Pool in an ef­fi­cient and eco­nomic man­ner,” she said. “A master plan was con­ceived and de­vel­oped to re­duce the over­head and op­er­at­ing costs so the so­ci­ety was wor­thy of be­ing funded.”

She noted that vol­un­teers have been work­ing hard to en­sure the pool would con­tinue to op­er­ate.

“The province is pleased to add our sup­port to this com­mu­nity’s drive to pro­vide on­go­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties for health pro­mo­tion,” said Col­well.

The fa­cil­ity is leased, by the province, to the Sco­tia Pool So­ci­ety for $1 a year, and vol­un­teers raise funds for op­er­a­tional costs. The so­ci­ety has been op­er­at­ing the 25-me­tre pool since 1999, and cur­rently has a lease that ex­pires in 2035.
