Bet­ter day­care on the way

TRURO, N.S. — The prov­ince is step­ping up over­sight of day­care pro­grams to en­sure fam­i­lies in Truro and else­where in Nova Sco­tia re­ceive a fair deal.

The Depart­ment of Ed­u­ca­tion and Early Child­hood De­vel­op­ment will have more author­ity over in­spec­tions car­ried out by fam­ily home day­care agen­cies. Fam­ily home child care agen­cies pro­vide sup­port and ac­count­abil­ity to ap­proved fam­ily home child care providers. Reg­u­lated fam­ily home child care is o ered by in­di­vid­u­als who are ap­proved un­der a li­censed fam­ily home child care agency. Ap­proved fam­ily home child care providers can pro­vide care for up to seven chil­dren of mixed ages, or nine chil­dren if they are all school-age. Ap­proved fam­ily home child care providers must fol­low pro­vin­cial reg­u­la­tions and are reg­u­larly mon­i­tored and in­spected. The prov­ince is also re­nam­ing he Day Care Act as the Early Learn­ing and Child Care Act and up­dat­ing its de ni­tions.
