New school year underway at Avon View

one place. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, let alone outnumbered. The rest of the day saw students exploring their new classes, which included a longer class period for all students. Class periods are 75 minutes long, but there are only four in each day. We still have an eightday cycle, but classes begin at 9 a.m., break for recess at 11:35 a.m. and resume at 11:55 a.m. for third period. Lunch break is at 1:10 p.m. and fourth period lasts from 2 p.m. until 3:15 p.m.

Our new AV teachers report that students seem fairly happy with the new schedule and many feel that the day seems to pass by quite quickly.

The start of a new school year also includes practicing our emergency drills. We have had one fire drill already, and another, along with a lockdown drill, will be in our near future. These sorts of drills are seldom fun but they are very important to help us feel that we are pre- pared for problems that might come our way. It is our priority to ensure that our students are safe.

Avon View’s cafeteria is now using a Zip Thru program that allows students to pay for their purchases using a pre-loaded card. More information can be found on AV’s website under the ‘parent’ tab.

We have sent home yellow demographics information sheets with students. Please make any changes to the information that we have on file so that we can contact parents about their children. Even if no changes have occurred, please return the forms to the school.

There will be no classes for students on Sept. 30, as this is a West Hants in-service day.
